The manner in which modern society has been structured has created a situation wherein consumption is easier than it has ever been before. That is a good thing in a lot of ways, since there is a pretty good chance that you would not be able to get medicine so easily under any other kind of system and food is far more readily available than it has ever been before as well. However, while the advantages of making it so easy to buy things are undeniable, the fact of the matter is that it has brought a lot of disaster along with it as well.
This is because of the fact that people often consume and replace things even if they don’t need to. If you were to calculate personal carbon footprint, you would notice that this pattern of behavior far increases it on average. The truth of the situation is that we need to reduce our rate of consumption, and recycling can help with that. Recycling makes it less necessary to use raw materials that need to be mined in a highly energy intensive process.
The less raw materials we need, the less our carbon footprint would be. Repurposing old material is incredibly effective at something of this sort, and that is why recycling is being pushed so heavily in so many circles. There are those that argue against its advantages, but it is one of the only ways in which normal everyday people can help make the world better than it is right now. We all need to play our part, and recycling on a regular basis allows us to do so in ways that are simple.
